Primary Recruitment FAQs

Do I have to join as a first-year student?

No, you do not. While many women join Panhellenic sororities in their first year, a significant number join as second and even third-year students. There is a place for every woman in our organizations

I am a legacy. What does that mean?

A legacy is a person who has an immediate family member, mother, sister, or grandmother, who is already a member of a sorority. Each organization is responsible for setting their own national policy regarding legacies and this information can be found by reaching out the chapter or the national organization. While in the past, legacy status generally meant an invitation to join, that is no longer the case. If you are a legacy, please contact the national sorority office regarding the legacy policy.

Are letters of recommendation required for recruitment?
No, letters of recommendation are not required for the Panhellenic recruitment process! However, if you have a family member or friend who is an alumnae member of a chapter and wishes to write a letter of recommendation for you, please ask that person to contact their national organization headquarters and follow their individual policy on recommendations. Do not send any letters to the Panhellenic Council.

Do all sororities have houses?

No, all our sororities do not have houses. We encourage you to ask questions about housing in a recruitment process or as you are researching various organizations. All chapters with houses have different live-in policies, and chapters are expected to provide education up front about these expectations before members join.

Which organizations exist at ECU?

All Panhellenic Council chapters established on campus are listed under our “Chapters” tab!

What are the benefits of joining a sorority?

There are many benefits to sorority membership including opportunities to engage in leadership development, academic and personal growth, career networking and alumni involvement. Sorority members regularly engage in meaningful community service and sororities foster the development of lifelong friendships.

What happens during a Recruitment?

ECU Panhellenic is excited to participate in values-based recruitment. Therefore, you should focus on finding the best match between your values and each chapter’s values. Recruitment has four rounds, each with a different focus and each round providing more time to meet members of the chapter. Round 1, Meet and Greet, is an informative session to learn about the basics of each chapter. Round 2, Sisterhood, creates space to learn about their unique national charity, annual events, and what makes each chapters sisterhood unique. Round 3, House Tours, will take you on a tour of the chapter house (if applicable) and should include learning about financial obligations. And finally, Round 4, Preference, provides for the most in-depth conversations about the organization’s values and your interest in the chapter. The chapter showcases their organization through a ceremony that is designed to help you determine which chapter is for you.

What if I don’t want to attend a certain chapter’s recruitment event?

ECU Panhellenic Recruitment strictly adheres to the guidelines set forth by the National Panhellenic Conference. A core expectation for chapters and potential new members is to participate fully in the process and be respectful to everyone throughout the process. PNM’s must attend all events on their schedule to remain in the process.

What should I wear during recruitment?

During the recruitment process you should dress to suit you and your style! The Meet and Greet Round is casual and you will be provided a Recruitment t-shirt that you can style however you would like! As the process continues, outfits tend to get progressively nicer with preference day being the nicest. Make sure to keep in mind that recruitment days can be very long, so you also want to make sure you feel comfortable!

Is there a dress code?

No! There is no dress code. However, if you need inspiration for what to wear, be sure to check out our Panhellenic Pinterest Page down below!

Who will be helping me through this process?

Your main point of contact will be your recruitment counselor, known as a Pi Chi. You will be placed into a group with about twenty other potential new members and led by two Pi Chi’s. These women are upper-class sorority members who have disassociated from their individual chapters to help you through the recruitment process.
