Membership Expectations

What can I expect as far as becoming a member of a chapter?

Each organization has a period of new member orientation as part of its expectations for new members, ranging in time based on individual and national timelines. During this time, you and other new members will participate in regular meetings to learn about the university and the fraternity/sorority history, leadership retreats, community service projects, and activities designed to build friendships among new members and the initiated members.

How long does joining a chapter take?

The new member education or intake process differs between organizations but typically ranges from 4-8 weeks. Ask members of the organization you are hoping to join for more specific information about the length of the program.

How much does it cost to be a member of a sorority?

Each chapter sets their own budget and fees, and costs can vary depending upon your membership status (New Member, Active Live-In-House member, Active Out-of-House member). Average Costs for New Members in their first semester range from $1,048-1,650 . During recruitment you will learn about each chapter’s fee structure and payment plan options.

Common Concerns/ Perceptions

What about hazing in sororities?

All fraternities and sororities are expected to abide by anti-hazing guidelines, expectations, and rules and are committed to a membership education period that instills a sense of responsibility and commitment in the new members. Hazing is against the law in the State of North Carolina and is taken seriously by East Carolina University, the Office of Student Engagement, and the governing councils. All student organizations are expected to follow these policies, and training and resources are provided to groups to help them create a positive new member experience.

What is the university’s policy on hazing?

Hazing is prohibited and strictly enforced by the national policies of all Panhellenic groups. Hazing is also a violation of ECU’s Student Code of Conduct, which applies to all student organizations on campus including sororities and fraternities. Allegations or concerns about hazing are investigated by the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities. All new members and chapter officers receive training annually on how to recognize and prevent hazing. If you are concerned about possible hazing, you can submit a report to the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilites.

What impact with joining a sorority have on my academic success?

The intention of fraternities and sororities is to provide support and assistance in a student’s academic career. It is our belief that these organizations should help improve a student’s undergraduate success through mentorship, academic support, wellness, and create a sense of belonging which we find is critical to student success.

Will joining a sorority affect my GPA?

The All-Panhellenic Semester and Cumulative GPAs are, on average, higher than or equal to the All Women and All University GPAs. The GPA of fraternity and sorority members has been consistently higher than the non-Greek GPA, including for students who join in their first semester at ECU.
