Potential New Member 101

How does recruitment work?

On behalf of East Carolina University, we are so happy you decided to sign up for recruitment or thinking about it. We understand that this can be a daunting process so you are in the right place to get the run down. Before you start on your recruitment process, you will need to attend our PNM orientation session where you will learn more about what to expect during the recruitment process. Recruitment is a mutual selection process based on preferences of the chapters and the potential new member (PNM). The National Panhellenic Conference has implemented a values-based recruitment process, so we encourage each candidate to assess what they are looking for in a potential sorority and seek out those values in each of our organizations. After each round, you will list your preference of the sororities you visited that day. You will receive your schedule for the next found the following day.

·      In Round One, Meet and Greet, you will visit each chapter in the ECU Main Campus Student center for 20 minutes each – This round will be split over two days so you have time to meet every chapter. On these two days you will be wearing your provided Panhellenic recruitment shirt. These are typically paired with a skirt or pair of pants, but wear the bottoms of your choice.

·      In Round Two, Sisterhood, you will visit up to eight chapters for 30 minutes each in the ECU Main Campus Student center. Sisterhood round focuses on each chapters sisterhood and philanthropy; each chapter has a unique national philanthropy and annual events to tell you about. Usually students wear a skirt and shirt or a summer dress to this round, but wear what makes you feel confident and comfortable.

·      In Round Three, House Tours, you will visit up to five chapters for 40 minutes each. You will be bussed to and from the ECU Main Student Center to the chapter houses. At the houses, you will have the opportunity to have in-depth conversations with members that you have connected with in previous rounds. In the past, students have worn a dress or shirt and skirt.

·      In Round Four, Preference round, you will visit up to two chapters for 55 minutes each. You will be bussed to and from the ECU Main Student Center to the chapter houses. During this round, chapters will share their preference ceremony with you! Each preference ceremony is unique to each chapter but the purpose of a chapter’s preference ceremony is to showcase an intimate side of their sisterhood. This round should have the longest and most in-depth conversations as you decide where you would like to join.

Expectations and Guidelines

1.     DO NOT SKIP ROUNDS. You will not be able to continue with recruitment if you skip any round without an excuse approved by the Panhellenic Executive Board.

2.     Do not be disrespectful to any chapter or chapter members under any circumstances. You will be dismissed from recruitment for severe disrespect.

3.     Follow the instructions of Pi Chi recruitment counselors and Panhellenic Executive Board members. They are there to help you!

4.     Do not be late to rounds. You may not be let in and missing rounds could be cause for dismissal from the Primary Recruitment process.

5.     Do not ask other PNMs or chapter members what sororities they like or dislike. The recruitment process only works when each PNM makes her own decision based on which chapters she feels her values fit best with.
