The Sorority Experience

No one has pride for their organization like an ECU Panhellenic woman. They joined to a part of something bigger than yourself, but they stay because they find a greater purpose, lifelong friendship, and a community of women unlike any other. This is all possible through the values that bind us. There is no place like Panhellenic!

ECU Panhellenic Vision Statement: Create a community of empowered women focused on leadership, service, learning, and mutual respect.

Our Values:

Leadership:

Panhellenic women are leaders in organizations and activities across campus. When you join a sorority, your chapter will encourage you to get involved both inside and out! Leadership development is one of the benefits of being in a sorority. Every chapter has multiple opportunities to get involved within the organization. Whether you choose to get involved in a larger role like an Executive Board position, or in a smaller role as a member of a committee or director, there is a leadership role for everyone! The leadership roles that your sorority will provide you will help you to further your leadership ability and grow so that you can be the best leader possible in and out of your chapter.

Service:

Panhellenic Women contribute so much to the ECU and surrounding Greenville communities. Each year, thousands of volunteer hours are recorded by Panhellenic Women within hundreds of organizations. This service and philanthropy are completed both individually and in groups in organizations like Pitt County Animal Shelter, ECUHealth, Circle of Sisterhood, Make-A-Wish, The Ronald McDonald House and many, many more!

Chapters also host their own philanthropy and service events throughout the year to benefit their national and local philanthropies. Panhellenic sororities often come together with each other and Fraternities and Sororities from other councils to participate in events and positively impact the greater community.

Learning:

Academic achievement is the primary reason we are all attending the East Carolina University. The ECU Panhellenic Association recognizes the importance of scholarship. Each Panhellenic organization has their own GPA requirements and is able to make its own membership decisions regarding maintaining a minimum GPA. It is important to understand that, as scholarship is a value of Panhellenic, if your GPA is lower than a chapter’s average GPA your opportunities for joining may decrease. We encourage you to inquire about this during recruitment.

Mutual Respect:

Joining a Panhellenic Sorority is the beginning of a lifelong commitment and of lifelong friendships. One of the best aspects of joining a sorority is the friends you will make through the sisterhood. You will form a bond with these women unlike any other. You will share in successes, happiness, and support each other in the occasional sorrow. You will find that relaxing and laughing with each other will be some of the most fulfilling times you and your sisters will have together. Sisterhood is more than the Greek letters on your chest – it’s the respect you have for the organizations and the bonds created. You will gain appreciation and respect for all Greek organization, based on your positive experiences. You respect the people those letters represent.

Why Join?

What does it mean to join a sorority at East Carolina?

To make the decision to join a sorority at East Carolina University is to make a lifelong commitment to better yourself and your community. Being involved as a fraternity/sorority member has the benefits of making a campus with thousands of students seem smaller, and the connections shared by our members offer a home away from home. Joining an organization can also open many doors to other opportunities, such as positional leadership, connection to values, mentorship, and more!

What makes one sorority different from another, and how do I choose one?

Our sororities are multifaceted in membership, and structurally each one looks for members that are committed to the values and ideals of the organizations. Some organizations offer specific experiential connections, and it is important to consider each organization and the way they recruit new members as you explore our community.

How to Join?

How do I join a sorority?

The Panhellenic Council holds one formal recruitment annually in the fall where students have an opportunity to meet each organization through a structured process. For more information, visit our Recruitment Page

What are the requirements to join?

Each organization has different criteria for membership that always includes a minimum grade point average. For formal recruitment, chapters look at the unweighted high school GPA for incoming first year students, or a collegiate GPA if you are an upper-class student.  While GPA requirements vary by chapter, students should expect that at least a 2.5 will be necessary to join any of our Panhellenic sororities
